LOCATION: City Island, Harrisburg, PA -> Pride of the Susquehanna Dock
TIME: 10:15am (Ride from 10:30am to 11:30am)

Yes, sometimes just ask, and ye shall receive. When PA Nonbelievers noticed that the nonprofit Pride of the Susquehanna offered a free one-hour cruise each Sunday morning during the summer to a consortium of local Christian churches, we asked for a similar privilege, and the boat operators said yes!

COME EARLY. The boat leaves at exactly 10:30am, and there are no reservations, so please arrive by 10:15 in order to ensure a seat. Additionally, space on the boat is first come, first serve.

If the weather is nice, pack a lunch (but leave it in your car for later…no outside food or drink allowed on the boat) and we’ll eat on City Island. If the weather is rainy, we’ll go to a nearby sub shop for eats.

Anyone interested in baseball is welcome to stay for a 2pm game between the Harrisburg Senators and the Altoona Curve at the City Island stadium.

As an organization, we’ve had several people contribute time and money to running our various events. Our participation in parade and street fair events, educational and organizational meetings, our involvement in various charity events, and our annual group parties, picnics and other fund raisers, have all been huge successes because of these contributions by our members.

However, running a growing organization sometimes takes more. Over the next few months, we will be starting up various committees to assist the board in some of the more routine, but necessary, tasks that don’t get a lot of press. Things like organizing the budget, doing the legwork to organize our events, composing our newsletter, producing our TV programs, maintaining membership and mailing lists, taking inventory and ordering our sale items, banners, tents and other equipment all require a large amount of time, and our board needs help from our membership to make these things work. If you have the time and/or ability to work in these areas, please let us know. You can approach any of our board members privately if you like, or contact us through the website here.

If you don’t have ready access to a board member, please let us know here:

http://www.panonbelievers.org/contact

Thanks, once again, to all of you who have put in your own time and money to help us with our projects we’ve done so far, and thank you to all of those who continue to make our organization what it is!

My name is Zachary Little and though rather new with PAN I have recognized that we have an untapped resource of great people capable of doing great things. After consulting with several board members and some other associate members it appeared that there was a consensual view that, unlike our religious counterparts, PAN (atheists, agnostics and non-believers in general) lacks a presence in our community that could benefit those in need and less fortunate than us. With this in mind, a group of dedicated members met over the weekend and partook in the first of hopefully many constructive meetings on an active and ongoing community outreach program. The new group is called the Community Involvement Committee.

What is it that the Community Involvement Committee (C.I.C.) does?

The goal of the C.I.C. is to cultivate opportunities for PAN members to become, as a unified group, contributors to the well-being and betterment of our communities. Although in its infancy, the C.I.C. is looking to actively seek out other organizations, groups or non-profits that could use a little extra help from the coordinated efforts of some good atheists, agnostics and non-believers. We will attempt to schedule regular meetings that will consist of sharing ideas, collaborating on projects, delegating responsibilities and strengthening friendships.

Who is the C.I.C. for?

Really for anyone who wants to join. While we are expected to coordinate and implement the outreach projects, we would gladly accept the opportunity for any of our PAN members to get involved. The more people we have the more we can do! We would also appreciate any great ideas that any members have in regards to charity. We want your input! The only thing required is to take this commitment seriously and above all, have fun!

In closing, I,would like to thank those who have helped bringing this very important program to fruition. More than that I, on behalf of the C.I.C., want to thank all of those who are going to help in the future. This takes valuable time away from friends and family. But remember, the greatest gift to ourselves is giving to others.

Thanks,

The Community Involvement Committee.

From Margaret Downey:

I have been in this fight with Mike from the beginning because to me it’s all about fighting discrimination. My amicus brief was submitted out of concern that nontheists in this country become instant victims of bigotry when the government endorses and promotes religion. The entanglement empowers the religious community and degrades the nonreligious community. The basic Constitutional principle of protecting the minority from the majority is corrupted with every prayer uttered in a government setting.

I’m with you, Mike in what ever challenge you might want to undertake to end the promotion of religion by any government official.

We have a good chance at ending the National Day of Prayer. Please support the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s pursuit and please continue to support Mike as he bravely works on reconstructing the Jeffersonian wall of church state separation. It is falling apart before our eyes.

Thanks for all you did, Mike. It was a gallant try and the Anti-Discrimination Support Network was proud to be a part of this legal battle.

On Sunday, May 9, PA Nonbelievers will have a booth for the eleventh year at the Olde York Street Fair in downtown York. Our booth will be at the SW corner of Market and Beaver Streets, one block west of the York Square, booth number 352.

The “official” fair hours are from 12:30 PM to 6:00 PM. However, traditionally the event is open for business by 11:00 or 11:30 AM. We will begin setting up at 9:30 AM and help is need for set up between 9:30 and 11:00, tear down at 6:00 PM, and for staffing the booth throughout the fair hours.

PLEASE NOTE: The weather forecast for Sunday is for a clear but windy and cool day, with a high of only 58. If you are planning on staying at the booth for any length of time, please dress for a cold, windy day. Every year we have people who disregard this advice and end up being miserable or leaving early. Bring along an extra sweater or jacket, and it will also help if you bring a folding chair.

See you on Sunday!

Thank you,
