At our booth today, the literature we handed out says that it’s the 3rd Thursday of every month. I’ve fixed our online information, and if you’re coming here for the first time and in the Annville area, please take note!

York Meeting Postponed until March 5th

In an abundance of caution and concern with safety of members traveling from various parts of PA, the Board of Directors has voted to cancel tomorrow's annual meeting and election of directors. As announced earlier, the new date will be March 5th, 10 AM, UUCY, York.

Candidates and members are welcome, weather permitting, to attend the Lemoyne meeting on Thursday and get to know some of the members. I'm sure the same goes for the other meetings throughout the month of February.

Here’s the location details for Saturday’s York meeting. All PAN members and area freethinkers are welcome to attend. Please, if you’ve been involved in the organization for awhile, we are looking to recruit board members to replace recent vacancies on the board, and we welcome all individuals who care about the organization and have some free time on their hands to apply.

Our board meeting, where we will try and incorporate our member suggestions/comments and vote in new board members, will directly follow, time and place will be announced in this meeting.

We all had a fantastic time, and want to thank Sen. Pat Vance for coming to visit with us and talk to us and answer our sometimes frank questions, with equally frank and straightforward answers. It’s unfortunately rare to find a politician that will directly answer a direct question, and she is definitely a rare politician!

Here’s a reminder that on Thursday, April 8th, PA Nonbelievers’ guest speaker at our Harrisburg meeting, will be State Senator Patricia Vance (R- Cumberland County).

The meeting is open to all members and friends of PA Nonbelievers, regardless of your county of residence.

We ask that you make an effort to arrive by 6:45pm so that we can complete meal ordering by 7pm when we hope to promptly start the meeting. As usual, dress is casual. Seating is limited, but overflow seating, if needed, may be offered.

Sen. Vance will speak about current issues in state government. Her special area of interest is health care, having been a registered nurse prior to entering politics. She serves as chair of the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee, and is also a member of the Appropriations, Banking and Insurance, Communications and Technology, and Finance committees. [It should be noted that Sen. Vance is not up for re-election until 2012. PA Nonbelievers does not involve itself in elections or partisan politics.]

We encourage you to prepare some questions to ask Sen. Vance at the meeting. If you care to submit any questions in advance (and in anonymity), please send them to us and we will forward them to Sen. Vance’s office this Thursday. It would be very helpful (but not absolutely necessary) if you would let us know if you will definitely be attending, so that we can set up sufficient seating.

Protests at the Lebanon PAN Meeting

A husband and wife team, the Jarboes, protested outside of our January 21st opening meeting in Lebanon, PA. Other than the novelty of being protested, our Lebanon meeting went off without a hitch. We spent a great deal of time chatting with the owner of the establishment, a born-again Christian who welcomed us in quite graciously.

Apparently this is a well-known area team who protest anything they find to be anti-Christian, and the community is well aware of these people. In the midst of this meeting, we noticed a gentleman outside arguing with the Jarboes, and when he came into the restaurant, he started to vent a bit inside about the inanity of the protesters. He assumed that there was some kind of Christian meeting going on inside, he didn’t realize they were protesting US. When we explained who we were, he calmed down tremendously, and chatted with us a bit while waiting for his food – Turns out he was just a random non-believer just like the rest of us, and stumbled onto our meeting! The look on his face was great, it was almost out of a situational comedy script!

Atheists Plan Lebanon Meeting

YORK, PA– PA Nonbelievers, Inc. will hold its first Lebanon-area meeting for atheists, agnostics, and secular humanists on Thursday, January 21.

“We have several members in Lebanon County who have traveled to our monthly meetings in York and Harrisburg,” said Steve Neubauer, president of the all-volunteer organization. “It’s time to offer a more convenient venue for them and for other like-minded people. So we decided to get the ball rolling by trying an informal get-together in January.”

“If the first event is successful and local members want to continue meeting on a regular basis, we’ll do whatever we can to support them,” Neubauer said. Membership in the organization is free.

Atheists Plan Chambersburg Meeting

YORK, PA– PA Nonbelievers, Inc. will hold its first Chambersburg-area meeting for atheists, agnostics, and secular humanists on Monday, January 18th.

“In recent months, several Franklin County residents have traveled to our monthly meetings in York and Harrisburg,” said Steve Neubauer, president of the all-volunteer organization. “And since the controversy over the Christian and atheist holiday displays at Chambersburg’s Memorial Fountain, we’ve been contacted by others looking for a local group of like-minded folks. So we decided to get the ball rolling by trying an informal get-together in January.”
